Joseph the Guardian

Matthew 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

Joseph never wore a crown, never preached a sermon, and never wrote a line of Scripture—but heaven trusted him with the greatest guardianship the world has ever known.

Day after day, Joseph provided what a growing boy needed. In the carpenter’s shop, he taught Him how to measure twice, cut straight, and finish what He started. He trained His hands, sharpened His mind, and shaped His character. Under Joseph’s roof, Jesus grew stronger in body, wiser in understanding, and richer in favor with God and man.

Joseph was God’s appointed guardian of His Son.  As we read in Matthew 2:13 God gave him the responsibility to be a guardian of his safety but not only of his safety but of his socialization. In Luke 2:43-44 we see they trusted him around others. And yet Joseph was not only his protector but also his provider for both growth and personal needs.

And now God puts that same calling upon us. We are guardians of His saints—called to protect truth, nurture growth, and care for souls. Sharing the gospel with the sinner and serving the gathering of the saints.

We should thank God most of all that he is the guardian of our souls, the Saviour of our souls (Luke 19:10), and the shepherd of our spirit (Matthew 18:12-13).
